The City of Richmond’s Alexandra District Energy Utility (ADEU) Phase Four project has earned the City the 2018 Innovative Energy Project of the Year award by The Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) for its excellence in energy management.
The Project of the Year award is an international award that recognizes an innovative energy project, including renewables and green projects that are making significant impacts on climate change. Factors that are considered during the award include the innovation and complexity of the project design, actual installation, operating costs, savings, and achievements.
“Richmond has been an international leader in district energy development to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Through innovation and conservation, we are proud of our achievements to secure a sustainable and economic energy source for thousands of residents and commercial and institutional users.”
The ADEU Phase Four project’s focus was to connect a new large retail development providing low carbon, cost effective and reliable energy while meeting the diverse energy demands of these new commercial buildings. Through the unique and innovative strategy of using air source heat pumps to connect them to the main ADEU system, Lulu Island Energy Company not only met the requirements of the commercial customers, but also allowed for the sharing of low carbon energy capacity. This project is the first district energy system in Canada to provide heating and cooling to large format retail building using such technology.

Richmond’s energy initiatives are being recognized for a 13th time after the city received the recent Innovative Energy Project of the Year Award. Through the municipally-owned Lulu Island Energy Company, Richmond’s district energy utilities are now serving more than 3,100 residential strata units and 400,000 square feet of commercial and other non-residential buildings. The program has led to a reduction of more than 2,300 tonnes in greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent of removing more than 710 cars from the City of Richmond roads.
The AEE is an international non-profit professional society of over 18,000 members which strives to promote the scientific and educational interests of those engaged in the energy industry. Each year, AEE recognizes individuals, organizations, and projects for their outstanding dedication and performance in energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions.
